DIY Simple Girls Headband
March 08, 2012Hi again! It’s Morgan here from Sweet Stitches with another sewing tutorial. As a follow-up to the headband tutorial I shared last week, I made a headband tutorial for little girls. My one year old daughter has hair half way down her back, so I always have to pull it away from her face. I came up with this simple headband to keep all the little whispies out of her eyes. Perfect for the summer!
With 2 kids, I’m all about fast and easy projects. This headband is so simple. All you need are 2 supplies. You won’t want to make just one! Go grab some scrap fabric and lets get started!
Gather your supplies:
– Scrap fabric
– Thin piece of elastic (color of your choice)
– Sewing machine, scissors, marking pen
1. Measure your daughter’s head and subtract 3 inches. For example: My daughter’s head measured 18″, so I cut the fabric to 15″x 2 1/4″. Then cut the elastic anywhere from 2″-3″ depending on how tight you want it.
2. Fold your fabric in half lengthwise (wrong sides together) and press to form a nice crease. Open fabric then fold each long edge towards the crease and press again. Then fold in half again and press one more time. This is now your headband.
3. Before you sew, open the headband and fold both short, raw edges in about 1/2″ and press. Then re-fold the headband and sew along the long open edge with a 1/4″ seem allowance. Do not sew along the 2 short edges.
4. Take your elastic and slide it into one of the short open ends about 1/2″. Sew the open end closed, making sure to catch the elastic. I like to do a straight stitch as well as a zig zag stitch to make sure the elastic is nice and secure. Make sure to back stitch several times.
5. Repeat step 4 with the other end of the headband by sliding the elastic into the other end of the headband then sewing the end shut. Be careful not to twist the elastic.
You are done! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! Thanks for having me, Kelle!
Love this tutorial! Will make perfect little gifts for my granddaughter for Easter.
SO cute! Will definitely have to make some for my daughter! Thank you!
